Homecoming Update

Many things may be said or written about Ernest Holloway. Some knew him as a classmate, colleague, or mentor.  Yet, many knew him simply as a friend.  As a youth who grew up in rural Oklahoma, he appreciated his meek upbringing, and embraced the pursuit of education.   He carried this pursuit to Langston University where a life-long relationship began.  Ernest Holloway was passionate about Langston University through good times and bad times.  He never wavered from his commitment to Dear Langston.  He encouraged and motivated countless students, staff, and faculty.  Even though his earthly life has ended, his passion for encouraging and motivating people continues on.  I was reminded today by Anthony Watson that Ernest Holloway’s messages of encouragement and motivation are instilled within us all who shared time with him.  Thus, Ernest Holloway’s legacy continues through us all.

Some of us knew him as a cousin, uncle, brother, and father.  The passion Ernest Holloway had for Dear Langston was greatly magnified by his love of family.  As someone who knew him as Dad, I must say God blessed me with a caring, loving, and engaging father. When my mother preceded him in death some 35 years ago, Dad did not miss a beat in molding me into the man that I have become.  The adage “walks the talk” exemplified Dad.  His actions mirrored his speech, and served as a foundation for my life.

Lastly and most importantly, Dad was a child of God.  He opted for humility over arrogance.  He was meek in spirit.  He cherished the fact that God the Father is not a respecter of persons.  During the past two months I was fortunate to spend time reading scriptures with Dad.  In doing so, I saw how he glorified Jesus.  I felt his love for the Lord.  About four weeks ago, Dad told me he was ready to go home.  Today, he arrived.  I look forward to feeling his presence again one day.

Health Update

Dad passed away just minutes ago today.  A more appropriate commentary will follow.

Health Update

On Dec. 6th Dad was transferred to the Kindred Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC) Hospital in Sugar Land, TX.  The goal is to convalesce at this facility for at most a month.  Afterwards, Dad will reside with me or a local RCFE with the hope of starting his chemotherapy.

Health Update

A jejunostomy tube was placed in Dad to facilitate feeding on Nov. 23rd at Sugar Land Methodist.  He developed a post-op ileus which has resolved.  His health has improved considerably since Monday, Nov. 28th.  MD Anderson provided minimum options for rehabilitating Dad's nutrition, and did not offer cancer treatment options beyond the conventional chemotherapy.  The oncologist and surgeon at Sugar Land Methodist have been committed to Dad's care from the onset.  They provided a strategy for combating the nutrition loss when options were few.  They also embraced humility over hubris. Over the next several weeks when Dad regains his strength he will undergo chemotherapy.  Within a day or two Dad will be transferred to a long-term acute care facility to convalesce.  Once he regains more of his strength he will be able to entertain calls.

Even though the medical professionals are doing their part it is through prayer and faith in God through his son Jesus Christ that has set Dad on a path to recovery.  Please continue to pray for him.

Health Update

For the moment Dad is receiving parenteral nutrition at MD Anderson Hospital.  He was diagnosed with metastatic gastric cancer.  Due to his weakened state he is not receiving any phone calls.

Health Update

Dad was discharged from Methodist Hospital on Oct. 21st.  He is resting at my home in Richmond where we will continue to support his eating and physical therapy activities.  On a light-hearted note if I could transfer 20lbs of my weight to dad, we both would have acceptable weights.

During the upcoming week we will seek a consult with the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and proceed with chemotherapy.  Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers.  My address is listed below:
